Who Is The Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute?

A nonpartisan organization led by Black women, BJLI provides a comprehensive approach to community-based leadership in action. We work holistically and side by side with community members to address the root causes of community disengagement through voter education, advocacy, and leadership development.

BJLI strengthens the current generation of Black women leaders while recruiting and preparing the next generation. We demonstrate the power of diversity and inclusion by encouraging and equipping leaders to participate in advocacy and governing processes.

What We Do

BJLI is focused on empowering Black women through community-based leadership in action, community empowerment and education.

Leadership Development

With BJLI’s support network and mentor matching, Black women leverage the experience and wisdom of their colleagues as they push for a more empowered community.

Advocacy

We equip people to effectively advocate for the policies they want to see in their own communities by teaching, disseminating, and leveraging our extensive network of social justice, civic, and faith organizations.

Voter Education

Democracy works best when all participants are informed of their rights and can equally access them. Our voter education strategy includes layered communication to ensure voters know when, where and how to vote.

Events

BJLI’s networking events, digital presence, sponsored forums, and communications allows people from all facets of life to connect with each other in a sustained way.

Our campaigns are organized efforts to achieve specific goals, often involving fundraising, raising awareness, and engaging supporters. BJLI uses marketing and fundraising strategies to maximize impact and achieve objectives related to our mission.

Meet Our Fellows

The Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute selects student leaders at Prairie View A&M, Paul Quinn College, Lamar University, Stephen F. Austin, Texas Southern University, Jarvis Christian University, Texas College, and Wiley University for paid fellowships. BJLI’s fellows sharpen their skills, build power in their communities, and walk in the footsteps of legends like Barbara Jordan herself.
